XBMC is an award-winning free and open source (GPL) software media player and entertainment hub for digital media. It’s a rock solid media center which supports most common audio, video, and image formats, playlists, audio visualizations, slideshows, weather forecast reporting, and third-party plugins. It supports an almost endless range of remote controls, and combined with its beautiful interface and powerful skinning engine, XBMC feels very natural to use from the couch and is the ideal solution for your home theater.
It has officially been rebranded to simply “XBMC” from its previous old name, “Xbox Media Center”. Xbox Media Centre was originally designed to be used exclusively for the original Xbox consoles, but due to its growing popularity, developers have released versions that are compatible with other OS, Linux, iOS, Mac OS X, and Windows. There are also standalone variations such as the bootable Live CD and Live USB.
XBMC features several open APIs to enable third-party developers to create capabilities which extend XBMC with lots of addons, such as plugins, scripts, skins/themes, visualizations, screensavers, web scrapers, web interfaces and more. XBMC has built-in scrapers to automatically download cover art, metadata information, and other related media artwork. Users can also customise with their own theme, many such third-party skins and themes exist that are well maintained by the community.
