by l33tstr33t on Oct.21, 2011, under Computing

Sick Beard is a server-based application that runs on your file server, it can manage and sort all of your television shows. It watches for new episodes of your favorite shows and when they are posted it downloads them, sorts and renames them, and optionally generates metadata for them. It currently supports NZBs.org, NZBMatrix, NZBs’R'Us, Newzbin, Womble’s Index, NZB.su, TVTorrents and EZRSS and retrieves show information from theTVDB.com and TVRage.com.

Features include:

  • automatic torrent/NZB download for new episodes
  • XBMC library updates and NFO/TBN generation
  • renames episode files for any show
  • sends NZBs directly to SABnzbd, prioritizes and categorizes them properly
  • available for any platform, uses simple HTTP interface
  • can notify XBMC or use Growl to notify any OSX/Windows PC when new episodes are downloaded
  • specials and double episode support

I just set it up on my PC, pointed it towards my TV folders, Selected the torrent option.

You need to add entries for shows you want it to watch, show it the folder the shows are stored in and it will find the missing ones. It’s best to have it setup to set new episodes to “skipped” by default and change them manually to “wanted”.

It’s designed for Usenet, it doesn’t really work that well with torrents. You should check out Usenet, it’s miles ahead of any other methods (fileshare etc). It’s a little harder to setup and costs money ($100 per year, but you can get a 14 day trial to try it out), but the choice and quality are way ahead. You’ll never run a torrent again. I detest uploading.

Check out my other blog entry to get setup with a free trial (you’ll need to pay $10 for nzbmatrix, but it’s worth it, don’t bother with Newzbin, Nzbmatrix is better):
